ABOUT THE GERMAN MAD
Thanks To
Bernd Engel of the Mad
Trash Web Site for much of this great information.
The first German Mad was published in September of 1967. This first edition of the German Mad is known as the "Williams" series. Until 1975, the German Mad was printed in Finland where printing costs were much cheaper, but production time was much longer. So, beginning with issue #78, the German Mad began printing in Germany.
In the beginning, the German Mad contained mostly material from the US edition. With
issue #33, Herbert Feuerstein became the editor. Under Feuerstein's
direction, the German Mad became the most successful of all non US Mad editions.
Some people have even said that the German issue was better than the US Edition.
Feuerstein wrote no articles, but he did gave the German Mad it's own style. It
was this "style" that made his Mad Magazine so successful. On
Saturday, October 11th, 1980 (during a book convention in Frankfurt), the first
meeting was held between the German Mad team and the US "Usual Gang of
Idiots". Here William M. Gaines received the "Alfred des Monats
(Alfred of the month, the rare collectible) from Herbert Feuerstein, and from
Rolf Trautmann, the oil painting, featuring the back of Gaines head.
After working 21 years as editor, Feuerstein left the Deutsches Mad for a career
in German television. In 1994, he received the famous Adolf Grimme Preis
award. After his departure, the German Mad was published bi-monthly with Klaus
Recht as the editor and publisher. Then, starting in 1994, Mad began
publishing on a monthly basis and after 32 years, the German Mad ended with
issue #300.
In October of 1998 (October 7th), the second edition of the German Mad was started. It was printed in full color, and was published by Dino-Verlag Comics. This "second" (or Dino) edition is still published today, and contains many original pieces.
